The story for Mercedes-Benz originates to the invention of the high-speed engine and the automobile by engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz in the 1880’s. Although, both had invented the automobile independently, they would soon lay the foundation of motorised private transport.

Karl Benz founded Benz & Co. Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik in Mannheim in October 1883 whilst Gottlieb Daimler founded Daimler-Motoren-Gasellschaft in November 1890. This was made possible with the assistance of financial investors and partners to ensure the private development of their companies.

The aim for both companies was to come up with a trademark in which it will be remembered throughout history and to ensure that the vehicles and products developed were unique and recognizable. Thus merging and combining businesses to create what initially was known as Benz and Daimler. The essence of the name Benz and Daimler was to represent the origination of their engines and vehicles as well as to represent quality.

The Benz & Cie. Trademark did not change, however the products Daimler-Motoren-Gasellschaft (DMG) produced appeared under the new brand name Mercedes by 1900.
